The amazing detail, the immediate grasp of mathematical beauty, the palpable confidence in continued progress make the Eiffel Tower a modern wonder—all the more so when one considers that it was never really intended to be a permanent structure. It was actually constructed as the entrance to the Exposition Universelle (a world fair commemorating the centennial of the French revolution) and was scheduled to be torn down after 20 years time. Despised by many artists and architects when it was built, it has become a beloved symbol of France.
